How To Implement Counseling In Your Quit Smoking Program


Counseling is one way in which you can strengthen your effort in your quit smoking program. It is not really required that you consult a professional counselor. If you have a doctor or a dentist who you trust, that person may well provide more than enough support.

In the initial stages, ask your health care professional to give you all the details on the many harmful effects of smoking. This person can then help you more effectively monitor your efforts and your progress and can give you many useful strategies and other suggestions as well.

Face-to-face, one-on-one counseling can be very helpful, but perhaps a bit intimidating as well. But that shouldn’t make you shy away from counseling in general. There are a few other possibilities to consider, such as group counseling or telephone counseling.

Group counseling has a wonderful effect, because there is nothing that feels as good as having others who face the same problems that you are encountering. When you hear the fears of others, and how difficult t is for them to pull no, you will feel surprisingly encouraged.

Group counseling can, and will, provide you with a wonderful arena in which to compare notes with other fellow quitters and you by helping them, and being helped by them, you can more accurately evaluate and monitor your own progress.

If you can remember other times in your life where you have ended up supporting and reassuring others, you can remember that it has a wonderful effect on your own well-being. When you talk convincingly to others, without knowing it, you are really convincing yourself as well. This will go a long way towards building up your own confidence that you will succeed in your quest to quit smoking.

Telephone counseling is also a great and useful tool that many people, unfortunately, tend to ignore. The best thing about telephone counseling is that it can be done at any time during the day, without causing too much of a strain on your schedule or saddling you with the need to travel to another location.

You have to consider that it is not always possible, let alone easy, to dash off to your counselor when you feel the urge to smoke, and that fact may occasionally leave you without the ability to talk to a professional at the exact moment that you may need one. This could leave you feeling like you are on your own at the worst possible time.

On the other hand if, at one of these crucial moments, you can just pick up your telephone and dial your counselor's number, you can get the support that you need with a minimum loss of time and effort.

In whatever form you seek it, you will almost certainly find that counseling is a very valuable, if not indispensable, tool in your quit smoking program.
